Addition syllabus for 3rd grade

In Grade 3 of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics, the focus in addition builds upon the foundational skills developed in previous grades. The addition standards in Grade 3 aim to develop students' fluency in addition facts, their understanding of place value, and their ability to solve addition problems in various contexts. Here are some key aspects of addition in Grade 3:

  1. Addition and Subtraction within 1,000: Students are expected to fluently add and subtract within 1,000 using various strategies. They should be able to mentally add and subtract numbers, use strategies based on place value (e.g., adding tens or hundreds), and apply standard algorithms for addition and subtraction.

  2. Properties of Addition: Students should understand the properties of addition, such as the commutative property (changing the order of addends does not change the sum) and the associative property (changing the grouping of addends does not change the sum). They should be able to apply these properties to solve addition problems.

  3. Estimation: Students should develop the ability to estimate the sum of two or more numbers and determine whether an answer is reasonable. Estimation helps students check the reasonableness of their solutions and develop number sense.

  4. Word Problems: Students should be able to solve addition word problems, including those involving two or three-digit numbers. They should understand the problem, identify the relevant information, and choose an appropriate addition strategy to solve it.

  5. Fluency in Addition Facts: Students should demonstrate fluency in adding within 20 and develop efficient strategies to derive unknown sums from known facts. They should also be able to use addition to solve related subtraction facts.

  6. Mental Math Strategies: Students should develop mental math strategies for addition, such as using doubles (e.g., 7 + 7 = 14, so 7 + 8 = 15) or making tens (e.g., 6 + 8 = 6 + 4 + 4 = 14). These strategies help students build number sense and flexibility in mental calculations.

By the end of Grade 3, students should have a solid foundation in addition, including fluency in addition facts, understanding of place value, and the ability to apply addition strategies to solve problems. These skills prepare them for more complex addition concepts and applications in higher grades.

Addition topics for 3rd grade

A topic is selected at the beginning of a session at Free Math Games and will be remembered when you move between games or activities. The math for the topic is carefully constructed to match the elementary math level commonly taught in US schools. This means that you as an elementary pupil should see similar math problems to those you are seeing at school (if you are at school) for any particular subject. Please let us know if that is not the case.

See the help box below for instructions on choosing a topic here at Free Math Games.
