This topic is intended to reinforce the mutual relationship between multiplication and division. Each question starts with a number. That number is multiplied by a second number then divided by a third number. The answer is given, but the second number (the multiple) is missing and needs to be calculated. You do this by multiplying the divisor (the third number) by the answer, then dividing that by the first number.
So, in the first question from the lesson we have an equation of the form:
4 x ▢ ÷ 3 = 12
We can calculate the missing value ▢ by moving the ÷ 3 to the other side of the equation which converts it to x 3. So now we know that:
4 x ▢ = 12 x 3 = 36
We can now move the x 4 across to the other side where it becomes ÷ 4. No we have:▢ = 36 ÷ 4 = 9
So the solution is that the value of the missing multiple is 9.
