3rd grade / Counting / In steps of 9 / Count down in steps of 9
Counting down in steps of 9 means taking away 9 from a number each time. This is a great way to practice your subtraction skills and learn about patterns. When you count down in steps of 9 from 90, you are also finding the numbers in the 9 times table. Look at the boxes below.
90 (this is our starting point)
90 - 9 = 81 (we've taken 9 away from 90 to make 81)
81 - 9 = 72 (another 9 taken away to make 72)
72 - 9 = 63 (another 9 taken away to make 63)
You can continue taking away 9 until you reach 0, and you will get all the numbers in the 9 times table.
This topic requires you to supply the missing number in lists that count down in steps of 9. There is one missing number in each list. Some of the missing numbers are in the middle of the lists, some are at the end. The lists count down from 90 to a minimum of 0.
An example question:
90, 81, ▢, 63, 54 : answer = 72
The answer is 72 because 81 - 9 = 72 (and 63 + 9 = 72).
