Multiplication Facts: Students consolidate their knowledge of multiplication facts and develop fluency in multiplication tables. They focus on memorizing and recalling multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. By the end of 4th grade, students are expected to have a strong foundation in multiplication facts. They are able to recognise and use square and cube numbers.
Mental math strategies: Students develop mental strategies to solve multiplication problems efficiently. Multiplying Larger Numbers: Students extend their multiplication skills to multiply larger numbers using formal written methods. They learn and practice the standard algorithm for multiplication, which involves multiplying each digit of one number by each digit of the other number and correctly placing the resulting products in the appropriate positions. For example, when multiplying 234 by 16, they multiply 4 by 6, 3 by 6, 2 by 6, 4 by 10, 3 by 10, and 2 by 10, and then add up the products to get the final answer.
Multiplication as Scaling: Students explore the concept of multiplication as scaling. They understand that multiplication can be used to scale up or scale down quantities. For example, if a recipe requires scaling up by a factor of 3, they know that they need to multiply the original quantities by 3 to make a larger batch.
Throughout 4th grade, students practice solving multiplication problems using various strategies, including mental methods and the standard algorithm.
